How Not to Design New Old Schools - Session 3

Sean McDougall, Campaign Manager, Design Council, London, UK

The UK has just embarked on what Prime Minister Tony Blair has described as “the greatest schools renewal program in British history”. Over the next 10-15 years, half of all secondary schools in the UK are going to be demolished and rebuilt, while all the rest (including primaries) will be thoroughly refurbished.

Anticipating this, the Design Council has been working with schools across England to help them understand how they can use the design process to reshape their whole experience. We’ve had amazing results covering the physical environment, systems and processes, products and services, and how we communicate. The skills that the teachers and students have learned have helped them to transform their schools and how they think of themselves and each other. They are easily transferable between old schools and new.

In this workshop, I’ll be talking about 360 degree flexible classrooms, learning incubators, student generated school rules and other projects. I’ll also be describing a process and some techniques that you can use with others to transform your school.
